Part of a townscape improvement project in Tottenham, mainly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, we restored this Edwardian commercial building.
We found photos of the original appearance in the local history museum, and uncovered traces of the original dark brown paintwork and two decorative medals on the only remaining original window. The elegant and generous upper floors windows had been replaced with small crude windows that bore no relation to the original design and the beautiful terracotta columns had been covered in many coats of paint. After different chemical treatments, the columns and intricate capitals re-emerged, needing only minor repairs. The Staffordshire Blues and glazed bricks also needed minor repairs and re-pointing.
